Deux Magots de Chine
13 rue Lagrange, Paris 5e
033.48.75 /closed Tue. /This is Chinese
restaurant I've been training. Their
potstickers aren't quite up to Louis's
standards, but they're not bad. If you ask
for "les fourmis qui montent l'arbre" they
will probably figure out you're a friend of
mine. 30-40 francs [BH-76].

Au Roy Gourmet
4 pl. des Victoires, Paris 1er
508.10.16 /closed Sat. evening, Sun.,

prix fixe menu (as well as a large selection

France. Also have the creme caramel [BH-76].

Chez Michel
Paris
/?? /Great [TOB-75].

Le Galant Verre
12 rue de Verneuil, Paris 7e
222.37.81 /closed Sun. & August. /Michelin
one-star. My favorite among the haute
cuisine places I've been to. Lots of unusual
recipes, e.g. scallops with cucumber in dill
sauce. Posh, but not stuffy--the waiters are
friendly. About 60-70 francs [BH-76].

Pommier-Laprugne
5 rue Berger, Paris 1er
236.08.39 /closed Sun. /This is the cr∧eperie
that makes hamburger cr∧epes. Real ketchup!
Under 20 francs, including another cr∧epe for
dessert-- try the citron press`e [BH-76].

Restaurant Vagenende
Paris
/?? /A cheap but remarkable restaurant still
with its belle epoque decor intact. Always
busy, amazing prix fixe menus still
available: three to four courses for about

Antico Martini

campo San Fantin,Venice
24121 /Open 6 Apr.-15 Nov., closed lunchtime
and Monday. /Best restaurant in Venice, two
Michelin stars. You eat out of doors in a
courtyard under a pergola. Expensive
[YAW-75]. The only two-star restaurant in
Venice and superb it is too. By far the best
place to eat in the city, and quite
reasonably priced considering what you get
[AJT-75].

Caffe Quadri
piazza San Marco 120, Venice
22105 /Open April-October, closed Mondays.
/Apart from being the place to sit and sip
one's Campari of an evening, Quadri is also
an excellent restaurant (it deserves better
than the limited praise that Guide Michelin
gives it). The decor is staggering, and the
atmosphere delightful --for some reason it is
never crowded, and one has plenty of room to
enjoy the music drifting up from outside.
Expensive ($15-20 apiece) [AJT-75].

Harry's Bar
calle Valaresso,Venice
36797 /Closed Mondays. /Ignore the name and
the international drinker's downstairs. One
Michelin star and many people eat nowhere
else. The homemade green pasta is
exceptional [YAW-75]. No, Yorick, two stars
and three-star people! [AJT-75].

Locanda Cipriani
Torcello, Venice
730150 /16 March to 4 November /Torcello was
the earliest inhabited island of the Venetian
Republic, and has a fabulous and rather
terrifying cathedral. The Locanda, which is
owned by the prominent Venetian hotelier,
Cipriani, is right next to the Basilica,
amidst the vineyards. Torcello is reached by
ferry from Venice -- fondamenta Nuove. One
Michelin star, deserves two, I think. About
$10 apiece, with wine [AJT-75].

Taverna La Fenice
San Marco 1938, Venice

23856 /Closed Wed. and 28 Nov. to 20 Dec.
/Right next to the Fenice Theatre. Good menu
and very reasonable prices (Lit.6000).
Probably the best of the second-echelon
places [AJT-75].
